“Why disability?” An invitation to (re)consider what we mean when we use the word ‘disability’

“Why disability?” It’s a question I often hear when people discover I care deeply about people called ‘disabled.’ I spend time with them, and speak, teach, and write about them. Sadly, I am often asked about ‘them.’ I am able-bodied as far as most people can tell... But I am less able than I appear.

Every organization goes through major periods of change that drastically shape and direct their future. Northwest is no different, and our history suggests such changes happen about every decade (e.g., moving to the TWU Campus in the late 1980s, closing down the Bible college in 2000, starting Immerse in 2013). Two major events have taken place in the last few months.

Serving the Global Bible Translation Movement, CanIL
|
|
In 2021, the Canada Institute of Linguistics (CanIL) stepped into a new training space that allowed us to enrol some very unique students and provide them with a mission-critical skill set for the global Bible translation movement. Little did we know we were embarking on what would become a whole new strategy that would bring us deeper into our mission, and closer to our Bible translation partners who work with minoritized language communities all over the world. To appreciate how this all developed, a bit of history might be helpful.

I grew up as a Fellowship Baptist in the Lower Mainland after immigrating from Scotland to Canada with my parents, grandmother, and siblings. I intended to go straight to university after high school, but my mother persuaded me to attend Bible college at the last minute, so I decided at the time to attend Northwest Baptist Theological College (NBTC) rather than UBC, a decision I have never regretted.

I really enjoyed my studies at Northwest—Theology 101 was particularly impactful and helped broaden my biblical understanding. I initially enrolled just for the one-year Bible certificate, but then felt compelled to go back for a second year and completed the Bible diploma. I learned so much, and felt my Christian walk was positively impacted as I learned more in-depth about the Bible and its history!

Exodus and Beyond: A celebration and symposium in honour of Dr. Larry Perkins
|
|
|
|
On March 10, a celebration was held honouring the scholarly contributions of Dr. Larry Perkins with the presentation of the Festschrift publication, "Themes and Texts: Exodus and Beyond." (A Festschrift is a collection of writings published in honour of a scholar.) Eighteen scholars contributed to this publication. Dr. Perkins was truly touched by the honour. Following the celebration, Dr. Dirk Büchner and Dr. Rob Hiebert, presented aspects of their chapters from the book, with Dr. Perkins responding to their presentations.
