Why do so many faithful churchgoers struggle to grow in Christlikeness? And why do so many people outside the church assume faith has nothing meaningful to say to life's biggest questions?
In this symposium, Dr. Jeff Kuhn looks honestly at the state of discipleship in North American churches. He names quiet drifts toward declining church engagement and widespread disillusionment caused by very public failures of Christian leadership.
From this vantage point, Jeff highlights the cultural, philosophical, and theological currents that have shaped—and often distorted—how the church forms people. Then, he offers a constructive way forward that draws from his Doctor of Ministry research into contemplative practices in seven local churches—culminating in best practices for teaching contemplative disciplines and practical implications for churches ready to renew their discipleship practices for the world we are in right now.

About the presenter
Jeff Kuhn (DMin) is married to Angela and has four adult daughters, a son-in-law, and a granddaughter. He counts these relationships among his greatest blessings and says they make him feel like “the richest of all men.” He serves part-time as a pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Hope, BC, and is also on the faculty of Northwest College & Seminary, where he is Mentor Training and Support Manager and Assistant Professor of Ministry Studies. His academic interests focus on spiritual formation and discipleship, and he hopes to help develop future pastor-scholars who can engage academic scholarship and translate it for everyday church members in ways that foster transformation. He also enjoys NCAA basketball and discovering new ways to smoke or barbecue meat to share with those he loves.
