Scholarships and Bursaries
The following are scholarships and bursaries awarded by Northwest to eligible Northwest students not participating in a CBTE program.
The Middleton family gave a gift to be used to award a bursary annually to a student intending to serve in a cross-cultural context.
In February 2020 Shirley Nishi requested that a special scholarship fund be set up in honour of Charlie Nishi. This fund’s focus is to support and sustain scholarships for lay leadership or those who are not in full time ministries. This is Charlie’s passion and was his personal testimony in his years of bi-vocational ministries.
In May 2004 a bursary was established in memory of Rev. Don Hills to be awarded to any Fellowship Baptist person training for pastoral ministry and registered in the Master of Divinity, or Master of Arts in Christian Studies.
Dong Kwang Church provides a scholarship of $2,000 to any Northwest student in a Korean-Language program who meets any of the prioritized criteria:
- Pastors in their 30s and 40s with a clear calling to ministry,
- Those dedicated to serving the next generation in Korea and Canada,
- Individuals whose GPA is over 3.0,
- Student with a family over single individuals.
In 2003 proceeds from the sale of property of Dr. Arthur Weir were donated to Northwest to provide financial aid to Northwest students.
In honour of Dr. Harris' service as President and upon the occasion of his retirement (1996/97) from that position, funds were given to provide an ongoing scholarship in his honour, particularly to those who excel in Applied Theology.
Monies were donated to establish a scholarship fund in memory of Dr. John Richards.
In October 2010 the Dr. Larry Perkins Bursary was established on the retirement of Dr. Larry Perkins from the office of President of Northwest Baptist Seminary. Funds to be used for general financial aid.
Galilee Korean Presbyterian Church provides a scholarship of $2,400 to provide financial aid to any Northwest student in a Korean-Language program who meets any of the prioritized criteria:
- Student from Galilee Korean Presbyterian Church
- M.Div student
- 3.5 GPA
- Next generation local church pastors
- Missionary candidates
Gangil Church provides a scholarship of $2,000 to any Northwest student in a Korean-Language program who meets any of the prioritized criteria:
- student from Gangil Church
- Korean M.Div program students
- local church pastor
- missionary candidate
In October 2007 Northwest was given an estate gift. This is applied to general bursaries, and to provide financial aid for Fellowship Prairie leadership development.
Hallelujah Church provides a scholarship of $2,000 to any Northwest student in a Korean-Language program who meets any of the prioritized criteria:
- Pastor currently serving in ministry
- Pastor's child
- Student from Hallelujah Church
If possible, this award is directed to a student in their third year, who plans to continue studies at Northwest.
When Okanagan Bible College closed, a small trust was passed on to Northwest to provide an annual bursary for a student intending to be involved in full time Christian service, with a minimal academic record of 2.0 GPA.
Given Jay’s heart for the importance of chaplaincy and theological education, the purpose of this fund is to support scholarships for chaplaincy or seminary students through an annual grant.
This fund was set up in memory of Jay and Verna Perkins. Funds from this endowment would provide financial assistance primarily to students registered with Northwest Baptist Seminary and enrolled in doctoral degree programs established by Northwest Baptist Seminary. Minimal amounts would be awarded annually to eligible students. At least one award would be made to an entering student annually. Should additional funds be available, then students already in a doctoral program and achieving minimally a 3.0 GPA in course work taken would be eligible. In addition, if possible, if one of the Perkins’ descendants or their spouses is in training for ministry with Northwest Seminary, they might also be eligible for bursary support based on the income produced from this fund.
This was given by Dr. Kope to assist a deserving student who evidences financial need enrolled in any program.
This fund was established in honour of Lynn Pierce, an outstanding graduate of the ECE program, who died tragically. Funds are used for general financial aid.
Northwest was given funds from the estate of Marjorie Panton. Funds are used for the support of financial aid as requested by the donor.
To a student in good standing in all areas of student life, entering into the final year of his or her program, with good potential, and who is preferably intending on missionary service, and has financial need.
In June 2006 Northwest received a donation from Mr. Norman Lemke to be used as financial aid to assist those preparing for involvement in cross-cultural ministry.
One Hope Church provides a scholarship of $2,000 to any Northwest student in a Korean-Language program who meets any of the prioritized criteria:
- A student in any program attending One Hope Church;
- A student preparing to work in an immigrant church or currently serving in ministry;
- Need based student.
A sum of money was donated anonymously over several years to support the awarding of several major scholarships for students intending to enter practical ministry.
Rev. Ian Bowie was a long-time board member and supporter of Northwest. In February 2003 the board set aside an annual scholarship to award to a Northwest student in Ian’s memory.
This fund was gifted to provide a bursary annually to a student intending to proceed into pastoral ministry. A donation was added to this in 2006 in memory of Ron & Lillian Dobson.
In June 2007 Northwest received monies from the estate of Ruth Richmond to create an annual bursary for students with a particular focus placed on Northwest alumni returning for further studies or international students.
Samuel Dongsan Weekend Retreat Church provides a scholarship of $2,000 to any Northwest student in a Korean-Language program who meets any of the prioritized criteria:

2) DMin Student

Funds from the sale of White Rock Fellowship Baptist Church in 2018 were received to set up scholarships annually to two students.
In 1998 a member of Burnett Memorial Baptist Church gave monies for the purpose of providing ongoing financial assistance to students, preferably those interested in serving cross-culturally, and whose academic record is minimally 2.0 GPA.
In the early 90's the estate of the late Laurie Thompson gave funds to Northwest to be used for student financial aid.
In 1976 funds were placed in trust with Northwest to provide bursaries to deserving students, particularly those planning to be involved in full time Christian ministry and who are in financial need.
A scholarship fund was set up in memory of KDMN graduate student Zai Min Han who passed away from COVID while serving on mission in 2021. A scholarship of $2,000 is provided to any Northwest student who meets any of the prioritized criteria:
- A DMin Student who is or has been an overseas missionary
- A student enrolled in any Northwest program who is preparing to become an overseas missionary
- A student living below the threshold living income
- A student with a GPA above 3.8
